Lightning Strike Scorches Hole in Waycross Bank, Rattles Workers

WAYCROSS, Ga. — A lightning strike that scorched a hole in the roof of a Waycross, Georgia bank Thursday afternoon left workers in the attic rattled, but fortunately no one was hurt, authorities told First Coast News.

The lightning strike before 1 p.m. did not spark a fire, but did leave visible damage to the SunTrust Bank branch located on Knight Avenue, Waycross Fire Chief David Eddins said.

Although there were maintenance crews working up in the attic when it happened, there were no injuries reported, the fire chief said. Even so, the crews were shaken up.

Authorities report the bank was closed afterward because crews need to evaluate damage to the building’s electrical system.
